Edward A. Cox, 88, of Fitzgerald, Georgia died Sunday, November 28, 2010, at Osceola Health Care in Ocilla.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at the First Baptist Church of Fitzgerald with Dr. Mike Ruffin and Rev. Dan Hayes officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 Tuesday evening in the chapel of Paulk Funeral Home.
Mr. Cox was born April 23, 1922 in Douglas, Georgia to the late Henry and Lilla Carver Cox. He was a 1941 graduate of Fitzgerald High School where he was a member of the football team. He worked as a young man delivering groceries throughout Fitzgerald. He worked for Dr. Ashley at Haile’s Drug Store and also at the Grand Theater before joining the Army in 1944. Mr. Cox served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He began his railroad career with ABC Railroad, worked for Atlantic Coastline Railroad, Seaboard Coastline and retired as a conductor for CSX Railroad with over 40 years of railroad service. He was known as “Steady Eddie” among his railroad colleagues. He was a 60-year Master Mason at Pine Level Lodge #353 F.&A.M. and a member of the Hasan Shrine in Albany. A member of First Baptist Church, Mr. Cox was a dependable usher for many years and an active member of the Baracca Sunday school class.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law: Julia & Mark Imm of Newark, DE and Lydia & Chris Cook of Fitzgerald; grandchildren and their spouses: Matthew Imm, Rachael & Juston Ling, Kyle & Allison Cook, Mark Cook, and Tim & Tracey Cox; and great-grandchildren: Nelson, Austin, and Cameron Cox. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Virginia Fletcher Cox, a son: Michael E. Cox and three brothers: Elzie Cox, Billy Cox, and Homer Cox.
