Obituary

George Washington High, Jr., age 82, of 386 Juless Street, Danville, died Tuesday, November 23, 2010 in Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.

Born October 11, 1928 in Blairs, Virginia, he was the son of the late George Washington High, Sr. and Mary Gladys Amos High. He lived most of his life in Danville and was employed by Dan River, Inc. for 35 years and later as a security guard at the Masonic Temple. Mr. High was a veteran of WWII, having served in the US Navy from February 1948 until February 1953 as a Seaman Second Class. His service was on the USNTC, Bainbridge, Maryland, the USS Eugene A. Greene, and the USS Ernest G. Small. He received the Victory WWII medal in February 1948. He attended Riveroak Church of God and was a member of the American Legion Post 1097. On May 1, 1948, he married Edith Grey High, who predeceased him.

He is survived by two sons: Ricky High of Florida and Derreke High of Rustburg; a daughter-in-law: Donna Sewell of Rustburg; two sisters: Mary Weigher of Pennsylvania and Linda High Bowman of Danville; three grandsons: Justin, Jacob, and Brandon High; two great-grandsons: his two companions, Little Bit and Garfield.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a daughter: Tammy Lynette High; four brothers: Russell High, Garland High, Roy High, and Elvin High; and by one sister: Dorothy Mae High.

Funeral services officiated by Rev. Rick Sewell will be held on Friday, November 26, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the graveside in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Linda Bowman, 753 Mt. View Drive (off Holland Road), Danville.
