TEWKSBURY: Charles E. "Charlie" McPhail, age 81, a lifelong Tewksbury resident, passed away at the Sawtelle Hospice House in Reading on Saturday, November 20, 2010.
He was the beloved husband of Lee (Burns) McPhail, with whom he celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on June 23, 2010.
Born in Lowell on May 7, 1929, he was the son of the late Lauchie and Cecelia (MacArthur) McPhail.
Charlie attended Tewksbury schools and the Lowell Vocational School.
In 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country during the Korean Conflict.
He was awarded several decorations for his military service including the Korean Service Medal with Four Bronze Service Stars and the United Nations Medal.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as an auto body repairman by the Fred F. Cain Auto Dealer ship in Wilmington, where he worked for over 40 years.
Charlie enjoyed many activities including gardening, vacationing at his log cabin in Sanford, ME, and the companionship of his Golden Retriever "Riley". In addition, he was an avid N.A.S.C.A.R. Auto Racing enthusiast.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by one son, Charles E. McPhail, Jr. and his wife Deborah of Tewksbury; one daughter, Nancie L. Fogg and her husband John of Tewksbury; two granddaughters, Kristen M. and Shauna L. McPhail both of Tewksbury; his brother-in-law, James E. Campana and his wife Irene of Waltham; also several nieces and nephews.
Mr. McPhail was the father of the late Deborah Lee McPhail and brother of the late John L. McPhail.
Calling hours Tuesday, Nov. 23, from 4-8 p.m., at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. Funeral services Wednesday, Nov. 24, at 10 a.m., at the Tewksbury United Methodist Church, 2335 Main St., Rte. 38, (cor. of Main and South Sts.). Interment at Tewksbury Cemetery.
