Obituary

BEVERLY: Herbert G. Bodie, 86, died suddenly Thursday, November 18, 2010 at the Radius Healthcare Center in Danvers. He was the husband of the late Doris H. (Symons) Bodie.
Born in Chicago, Illinois on June 2, 1924 he was the son of the late Martin and Elizabeth (Jaehnert) Bodie. Raised and educated in Chicago, he was a graduate of the University of Chicago with a Bachelor Degree in Philosophy in 1947. He later received his Masters Degree in Education at Stetson University in Deland, FL. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a Purple Heart recipient, he served as an infantryman in the 96th Division and saw combat in both the Battles of Leyte and Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in January 1946.
Herb had a long career as an engineer, teacher and instructor. He was employed at the Western Electric Company, Mount Dora High School in Florida, Raytheon Service Company, EMI Medical, Inc. and finally Data General Corp. from which he retired in May 1990.
He traveled widely in North and South America and in Europe, both privately and as a company representative. His avocational interests lie in astronomy, the study of archeology and in particular the origins of both secular and religious concepts that form the basis of our modern world.
He is survived by his stepchildren, Carole A. Wilcox of Beverly and Kent and his wife, Sara Mitchell of Brookline; six grandchildren, Alison Carnes of Black Canyon, AZ, William and his wife, Olympia Frazier and Theresa Frazier all of Stoneham, Gary and his wife, Tracy Wilcox of Salem, Eliot and his wife, Jane Mitchell of Pasadena, CA and Katherine Mitchell of Brookline; six great-grandchildren, James, Daniel and Katherine Frazier, Chelsea Carnes and Ashley and Breanna Wilcox and a niece and nephew, Nancy Donahue and Doug Bodie.
His funeral service will be held on Monday, November 29th in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot Street, Beverly at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. Interment will be held on the Central Cemetery, Beverly. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the “Resident Activity Fund” Radius Healthcare, 56 Liberty St., Danvers, MA 01923.
