Salem: J. Roland Caron age 86 of Salem, died unexpectedly, Thursday, November 18, 2010, surrounded by his family at the NSMC / Salem Hospital. He was the devoted husband of Vivian L. (Cotti) Caron with whom he shared 55 years of marriage.
Born in Springfield he was the son of the late J.B. Real and Merilda (Belleau) Caron and was raised in Salem by his aunt the late Rebecca Belleau. He was a graduate of St. Joseph Academy. During World War II, Roland served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in Europe and was decorated several times for his 24 missions as an aerial gunner. Following his tour of duty, he returned to Salem and began working for BOMAC of Beverly. He later worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance until he formed his own business under the name of J. Roland Caron Real Estate and Insurance of Salem. It was during these years that he worked full time for Salem State College until his retirement in 1986.
Roland was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and a loyal friend to many. During his children’s school years he was active in St. John Prep. fundraising, and in later years was a volunteer for Hospice of the North Shore. He was an avid reader, and one who always kept abreast of local and international news, reading three daily newspaper. Roland was an active member of Ste. Anne Parish of Salem.
In addition to his wife Vivian, he is survived by 2 sons, Daniel J. Caron and his wife Susan of Framingham, Roland F. Caron and his wife Cheryl of Lynnfield, a daughter, Becky Henrick and her husband Daniel of Danvers, a sister-in-law, Phyllis Sullivan of Wenham, a brother-in-law, Felix Cotti and his wife Christine of Topsfield, 7 grandchildren, Matthew & James Caron, Kristen & Jennifer Henrick, Emily Caron, Steven & Daniel Schedin as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Thomas A. Caron.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the Levesque Funeral Home, 163 Lafayette St. [Rt. 114 / 1-A] Salem on Monday, November 22, 2010 at 8:45 a.m. to be followed by his funeral mass in Ste. Anne Church, Jefferson Ave., Salem at 10 a.m. Visiting hours: Sunday 3 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
