Abigail (McCormick) Hamilton, 83, a resident of Winchester for over 50 years, passed away at the Atria Longmeadow Place in Burlington, on November 12, 2010, after a long illness. She was the beloved wife for 54 years of Herbert L. “Pete” Hamilton, Jr.
Born in Princeton, WV, Abby was the daughter of the late Kenneth Kyle and Julia (Cargill) McCormick. She attended Salem College in North Carolina, before enrolling in the Yale University School of Architecture where she graduated with a degree in architecture in 1949. A residential architect, talented artist and member of the Winchester Studio Guild, some of Mrs. Hamilton’s oil paintings were sold and exhibited locally at community art shows and at Winchester Hospital. A staff member at the Atria Longmeadow Place recommended that she submit one of her paintings as an entry for their calendar collection. Abby’s entry was selected and included in the yearly calendar.
Mrs. Hamilton also enjoyed reading fiction, especially Jane Austen novels, and works by William Shakespeare. She and her husband enjoyed membership in the Winchester Shakespeare Club and were active volunteers with the Meals-On-Wheels program in Winchester.
In addition to her husband, she leaves behind two sons; Paul Samuel “Hank” Hamilton of Acton and Phillip Lewis Hamilton of Tewksbury. Two grandsons, Travis and Curtis Hamilton, further survive her.
Funeral Services and burial are private. If desired, donations in Abby’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
