Elizabeth “Betty” Louise (Murphy) Bothne, age 84, of Los Angeles, CA passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 13, 2010. Beloved wife of the late Karl Bothne, she is survived by her twin sister, Marie Hogan, three daughters - Karen and son-in law Kevin Wons of Fallston, MD, Janet and Nancy Bothne of Los Angeles, CA, and two grandchildren – Lauren Wons of Madison, WI and Meghan Wons of Denver, CO. Betty was born in Dorchester, daughter of the late Aden and Mary Murphy and sister to twin Marie, and siblings Helen and Edward. Upon marriage she lived in Dedham where she was a loving mother and homemaker until widowed at age 42. Raising three young daughters on her own, she returned to work as a telephone operator for The New England Telephone Company where she stayed until her retirement.
After retirement Betty began the next chapter of her life relocating to Quincy to live with her twin sister Marie Hogan. The two were often seen in identical dress at the “Fox and Hound” restaurant where they loved socializing with the other regular patrons. When Betty’s health began to fail about three years ago, the twins moved to Los Angeles, CA to be close to Betty’s daughters Nancy and Janet. There they frequented “Sonny McLean’s”, an establishment that caters to transplanted Bostonians, and found New England kindred spirits who shared their love of the Red Sox and New England Patriots. Betty loved the California climate and got much joy from living with her 4 ‘grand-dogs’.
Betty’s kind hearted and jovial spirit remained with her until the day she died. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life by visiting George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 456 High St., Dedham, on Monday, November 22nd from 4 - 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Tuesday, November 23rd at St. Susanna's Catholic Church, 262 Needham St., Dedham at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow mass at St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury.
