Clara Mitchell Higgins, formerly of 181 Airport Road, Ringgold, died Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at her residence. Born June 29, 1915, in Cedar Town, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late James Alexander Mitchell, Sr. and Lillie Bell Casey Mitchell. She was married to Porter Griffin Higgins who predeceased her on December 6, 2004.
Clara had lived in Danville since age 14 and worked 36 years for Dan River Mills, retiring at age 52. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Ballard Pruitt Post 647 of Danville. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by a great nephew, William Tolbert, III, of Augusta, GA; a niece, Betty Tolbert of Waycross, GA and a number of other nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by five brothers, Charlie Sylvester Mitchell, Ruel Perryman Mitchell, William Harvey Mitchell, James Alexander Mitchell, Jr. and Cecil Garland Mitchell and two sisters, Helen Mitchell Ware and Vinna Mitchell Moose.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 13, 2010 at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment will follow in Schoolfield Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.
