Robert Paul “Bob” Sowers, age 84, formerly of 1976 Hunters Lane, Blairs, died Sunday, November 7, 2010 in Danville Regional Medical Center after a long battle with kidney failure.
Born September 21, 1926 in Wheeling, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Henry Lee Sowers and Lillian Elizabeth Flinchum Sowers. He served in the United States Navy and was a retired maintenance supervisor for Porter Disston, where he was employed for 22 years. Mr. Sowers was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.
He was married to Vera E. Mangus Sowers, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by six daughters: Elizabeth S. Cunningham of Connecticut, Peggy S. Williams of Hampton, Loraine Simpkins, Wanda Scearce, and Karen Barber, all of Danville, and Debra Matthews of Henderson, NC.; two sons: James Presley of Blairs and Earl Presley of Danville; one sister: Dorothy King of Charleston, West Virginia; eighteen grandchildren, and a number of great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one son: Bobby Sowers; three brothers: Bill Sowers, Marvin Sowers, and Henry Sowers, and also by one granddaughter, Bethany "Cole" Thomas.
Funeral services officiated by Rev. Gilmore Hundley and Rev. Bob Yeaman will be held on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at eleven o’clock at the Barker Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 from 6 until 8 p.m. At other times, they will be at the residence of his daughter, Karen Barber, 196 Maxey Lane, Danville.
