Rev. Francis G. Goss age 91 of Foxboro, formerly of Brockton and Jamaica Plain died peacefully Thursday November 4, 2010 at his home. He was born in Jamaica Plain, the son of the late James J. and Ellen E. (Bagley) Goss and was the last survivor of twelve children. Fr. Goss was a graduate of Boston English High School in 1938 and St. John’s Seminary, Brighton and was ordained by the late Richard Cardinal Cushing on May 1, 1947 in the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Boston. After his ordination Fr. Goss was assigned to St. Ann’s Church, Marshfield as associate Pastor. Later he served at St. John the Evangelist Church, Wellesley, St. Vincent de Paul Church, South Boston, Sacred Heart Church, East Cambridge, Immaculate Conception Church, East Weymouth and St. Edward’s Church, Brockton. In January of 1968 he was appointed Chaplin of Medfield State Hospital by Richard Cardinal Cushing. On October 31, 1972 he was appointed by Cardinal Medeiros as the Pastor of St. Ann’s Church, West Bridgewater. After seven years as the pastor, he was appointed parish priest at St. Linus Parish, Natick. Upon his retirement in 1992 as the Chaplain of Faulkner Hospital, Jamaica Plain he took up residence as a Senior Priest at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Brockton where he had resided until moving to Foxboro last year. He was a member of the 4th Degree Cardinal O’Connell Assembly Knights of Columbus. In his younger years Fr. Goss was an accomplished athlete who enjoyed playing hockey, golf, bowling and skiing. He had played baseball, was an avid baseball fan who loved to talk of the history of baseball, especially the 1930’s era.
He is survived by many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and was the brother of the late Joseph, James, William, and John Goss, Mary Madden, Catherine Donovan, Sister Mary Helene RSM, Florence Kennedy, Eileen Jarvis and Ellen and Helen Goss.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be concelebrated in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 433 West St., Brockton Monday at 11 am. Burial in Pine Hill Cemetery W. Bridgewater. Father Goss will lie in state in Our Lady of Lourdes Church Sunday 2-6 pm. Donations in his memory may be made to Regina Cleri, 60 William Cardinal O’Connell Way, Boston, MA 02114.
