Obituary

Worcester/Charlton – John R. Slattery, 81, formerly of 6 Uxbridge St., Worcester, died peacefully October 29, 2010, under the care of Overlook Hospice Services.

He leaves his wife of 57 years, Phyllis (Stanikmas) Slattery, one daughter, Kathleen Allard of Hong Kong, many nieces, nephews and cousins, three sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law. He was born in Worcester, son of the late Lawrence and Mary (Deignan) Slattery. His brothers James and Lawrence predeceased him.

A 1948 graduate of Commerce High School, he earned a B.S. in Education from Worcester State College. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant. He earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Boston University and became a guidance counselor for the Worcester Public Schools. He spent the majority of his career at Burncoat Senior High School. He was a member of the NEA, MTA, WCPGA and RSVP. He moved to Charlton in 2007.

At his request, there are no calling hours. There will be a funeral mass at 11am on Saturday, November 6 at St. Bernard’s Church, 228 Lincoln St., Worcester. Burial in St. John’s Cemetery will be private at a later date. Please omit flowers. Donations may be made in his name to the Worcester Public Library or Charlton Public Library.
