Obituary

LITCHFIELD, NH - Chester E. Markiewicz, 96, formerly of Riverview Circle, died Thursday, October 28, 2010 in the Tilton Veterans Home after a short illness . His wife of 32 years, Dorothy Alma (Greene) Markiewicz died in 1978.

He leaves a daughter, Deborah Sawyer and her husband Michael D. Sawyer of Litchfield, NH; 3 brothers, Walter Markiewicz and Frank Markiewicz both of Webster, and Joseph Markiewicz of Solon, Ohio; 2 sisters, Sr. Mary Adelia of the Felician Sisters in Enfield, CT and Theresa Pukalo of Canterbury, CT; 2 grandchildren, Sara Crump and her husband Joseph Crump of Harrisburg, NC, Jacob Sawyer of Litchfield, NH; 2 great grandchildren, Brandy Crump and Nicholas Crump; nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Brisson and 5 brothers, John, Bernard, Steven, Henry and William Markiewicz; he was also predeceased by his beloved girlfriend, Mary Ruskowski.

He was born in Webster, one of the 12 children of Joseph and Delia Pelagia (Kulczak) Markiewicz, and moved to Albany, NY before settling in Litchfield, NH.

Mr. Markiewicz was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a military policeman in the European, African and Middle Eastern campaigns. He worked at Cranston Print Works, Company as a boiler tender, he was then employed as a chef in many 4 star restaurants across the country, he retired in 1981 as a mail processor with the Albany, NY post office.

He was a former 30 year member of Saint Joseph Basilica in Webster, MA and a 30 year member of Saint Clare’s Church in Albany, NY. He was a longtime volunteer at Saint Clare’s and a founding member of the Polish Community Center, and a member of the Elks Club. He belonged to the Square Dance Club, the Mid Singles Club both of Albany. He loved polkas, country music and dancing. He danced for many charity events to raise funds for cerebral palsy. He enjoyed playing golf and was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan.

The funeral Mass will be held Saturday, November 6, at 10:30 AM in Saint Joseph Basilica, 53 Whitcomb Street, Webster, MA, please gather at the church. Burial will held Monday, November 8, at 1:00 PM in Our Lady of Angels cemetery, Albany NY. There are no calling hours.
