Howard B. Baker, 82, of Norton passed away unexpectedly at the home of his daughter in Norton
on Friday October 29, 2010. He was the husband of Alice E. (Miller) Baker.
Born in Pottstown, PA on December 20, 1927 he was a son of the late Charles F., Sr. and Lois (Brooks) Baker.
Howard spent his early childhood living in CT. and in 1937 his family settled in Norton. He was educated in Norton schools and was a1945 graduate of Norton High School. He served in the United States Army during WWII and was honorably discharged with the rank of Private.
Mr. Baker, a 73 year resident of Norton was a retired Communications Consultant. At age 16 he became a volunteer firefighter for the town of Norton and proudly served the community for many years.
Active in town affairs, Howard was the former director of Emergency Management, was instrumental in the building of the first communications center in town and for many years served on the Norton Water Commission. For his many years of commitment to the Town of Norton, Mr. Baker was honored by having the annual 2008 town report dedicated in his name.
He was a longtime member of the Trinitarian Congregational Church in Norton where he served as a former church moderator.
Mr. Baker’s other memberships included being a member and past master of St. James Masonic Lodge in Mansfield. He was also a member and past master of the Norton Grange and a past master of the Bay State Pomona, and was a member of the Lieutenant Harold A. Healy American Legion Post 222 in Norton.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his children Christopher F. Baker of Norton, Dorothy E. Baker of Norton, Linda L. Vollmerding of Laconia, NH and JoAnn A. Baker of Middletown, CT. Brother of the late Charles F. Baker, Jr. and Natalie B. Therrien, he is also survived by his adoring grandchildren Nathan, Simon, Krista, Laura, Eric, Alyson, Christopher, Jessica, Danny, Jill and the late Reuben, his great grandchildren Victoria, Cassandra, Grace, Winston, Ethan, Rylee and Annebelle, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Thursday November 4th at 10:00 A.M. in The Trinitarian Congregational Church, East Main and Pine Streets, Norton. Burial will follow in the Norton Center Cemetery, Norton.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday November 3rd from 5-8 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton.
In lieu of flowers, Howard’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Trinitarian Congregational Church P.O. Box 2068 Norton, MA 02766.
