Obituary

THOMPSON, CT – Sylvio A. “Chippy” Gilbert, 83, of Sand Dam Road, died Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at his home. His wife of 54 years, Barbara C. (Kleindienst) Gilbert died in 2006.

He leaves 3 sons, Michael A. Gilbert and his wife Faye of Thompson, CT, Ronald M. Gilbert of Beverly Hills, FL and Jeremy H. Gilbert of Lowell, MA; 3 sisters, Lorraine Puls and Lucille Gilbert, both of Webster, MA and Doris Warhurst of Port Orchid, WA; 2 sisters-in-law, June Gilbert of Warren, NJ and Marjorie Creaturo of Stonington, CT; a step-granddaughter, Tracy Gustafson of Killingly; nephews and nieces; and a special friend, Monica Bass of Webster, MA. He was preceded in death by his brother, George Gilbert of Warren, NJ.

He was born in Thompson, a son of Wilfred O. and Rose D. (Labossiere) Gilbert. He was raised in Webster, MA and moved to Thompson 60 years ago. He graduated from Bartlett High School in Webster, MA.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Webster-Dudley American Legion Post # 184 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 654, both in Webster.

Mr. Gilbert first worked as a rural route mailman for the Webster Post Office. He then owned and operated Gilbert’s Market in Webster from 1959 to 2006. He also owned a laundromat and 2 car washes.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Donations in his name may be made to either the VNA of Southern Worcester County, PO Box 368, or to the Webster-Dudley Veterans Council, Veterans Way, both in Webster, MA 01570. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Scanlon Funeral Service, 38 East Main Street, Webster.
