Gary Bateman passed away at his home Monday, October 25,2010 in West Roxbury, MA. Gary led an active and adventurous life. In 2001, he met his beloved wife Kathleen (Rana) Bateman while trekking in the Himalayas with his best friend Steven Elliott. In 2002, Kathleen and Gary traveled around the world for six months before settling in Boston. In 2008, they welcomed their daughter, Chelsea, into their lives. Gary was a devoted and loving father.
Also in 2008, Gary was diagnosed with melanoma. He was cared for by his wife, Kathleen, in-laws, Anne and Salvatore Rana, Sarah Rana and her husband, Joel Burman, Kathleen and Walter McDonough, and friends, Steven Elliott, Melissa Walsh, Jennifer Morrison and Mo Teken.
Gary is survived by the aforementioned family and friends as well as by his family in England. Gary was the beloved son of Stella and Brian Bateman, brother of Adam and Paul Bateman and dear brother-in-law of Ann Bateman and cherished uncle of Hannah, Sam and James Bateman.
Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours at the William J. Gormley Funeral Home at 2055 Centre Street, West Roxbury, MA from 1 to 5pm on Saturday, October 30. A gathering will follow the conclusion of visiting hours.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made for Chelsea Bateman’s education to the Custodial Savings Account of Chelsea Bateman c/o Brookline Bank, 1808 Centre St. West Roxbury, MA 02132 or donations may be made to the Melanoma Research Foundation (www.melanoma.org) in Gary’s memory.
