COCHITUATE/HOLLISTON: Edward F. “Red” Maley, 82, died on Thursday evening, October 21, 2010 with his devoted family at his side following a period of declining health.
He was born in Maynard on November 17, 1927 the son of the late Frank J. Maley and Irene C. (O’Donnell) Maley.
Red is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Marie I. (Weeks) Maley of Holliston formerly of Cochituate. He was the devoted father of Michael P. Maley and his wife Barbara of Grafton; William P. Maley and his wife Valerie of Holliston; John T. Maley and his wife AnaReghina Wong-Maley, DDS of San Francisco, CA; Charles F. Maley of Ashland; Annemarie Maley-Rockwell and her husband Dr. Jeff Rockwell of Marblehead; Kathleen M. Mooradd and her husband John of Medway and Theresa I. Maley of Holliston. He was the father of the late Edward J. Maley who died in July of 1991. He is also survived by 12 cherished grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Red has been a resident of Cochituate for over 60 years and moved to Holliston a few years ago. He was a graduate of Wayland High School with the Class of 1945 and attended Boston College. He served his country proudly during World War II with the United States Navy. For many years he was associated with Taylor and Cox Tree Service of Cochituate as an Arborist. In 1953, he was the co-founder of Cedar Lawn Tree Service of Ashland, a family business which has continued to operate in the metrowest area by his children whom Red was very proud of. In his earlier years he served as a Pop Warner coach for his sons in Cochituate. In the 1960’s he was a member of the Kiwanis and also served on several committees at St. Zepherins Church. He was a charter member of the Massachusetts Arborist Association. Red enjoyed being outdoors no matter the weather, loved fishing in the ocean as well as on Lake Cochituate. He will be remembered by those who knew him as an honest and hardworking man who was an expert in the care and knowledge of trees. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather and his family was the center of his life.
Visitations will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Rd (Off Rte 30), Cochituate.
Family and friends may gather at the funeral home on Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010 at 10:00 am followed by his Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am at St. Zepherins Church, 99 Main St (Rte 27), Cochituate.
Interment will follow in the Maley family lot in Lakeview Cemetery in Cochituate.
In lieu of flowers, his family suggests memorial gifts in Red’s memory be sent to the Learning Center for the Deaf, 848 Central St, Framingham, MA 01701.
