WOLFEBORO, N.H./SPENCER: Charles Adelard Snay, 93, died Friday, Oct. 22 in Huggins Hospital, Wolfeboro, N.H. after an illness. During the last five years of his life, he lived in Wolfeboro, NH with his daughter, Gloria St. Martin, and her husband, Paul. Mr. Snay was raised in Spencer, MA son of George and T. Marie (Brodeur) Snay and lived most of his adult life in Worcester, MA. After graduating from Holy Cross College in 1940, Charles worked with the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad, which later became part of Conrail.
A loving husband and father, Charles and his late wife, Rita, raised three daughters: Gloria St. Martin; Eleanor Snay of Elgin, SC; and Diane Mullen of Foxboro, MA; and a son, Richard Snay of Montgomery Village, MD. He is survived by his four children and their spouses, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to being unassuming and devout, Mr. Snay was courageous. One morning in 1958, he heard a plea for help from a woman trapped inside a burning house. The floor of the house had collapsed from a gas explosion, causing the woman to fall into the basement. She was unable to walk under her own power. Mr. Snay entered the burning building and carried her to safety.
Mr. Snay was elected President of his graduating class at David Prouty High School in Spencer where he had excelled in baseball, track and basketball. He later played baseball for Holy Cross College and, for several years, served as Scoutmaster of the Boy Scout troop affiliated with Our Lady of Vilna Church in Worcester. He was a member of the Greendale men’s club and their bowling league and the American Canadian Association.
The funeral will be held Monday, Oct. 25 from J. HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer with a Mass at 12:00 PM in St. Pius X Church, 1153 Main Street, Leicester.
