Gyula F. Marczinovits, Hungarian Freedom Fighter, 72, passed away at UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus on Wednesday, October 20, 2010, after a long illness. He leaves his wife of 31 years, Marion B. (Lubin) Marczinovits of Auburn; a step-daughter Lori Hammond of Auburn; and a step-son Michael Conrad and his wife Jennifer of Worcester. He was the beloved "Papa" of five grandchildren: Kaleena, Chadd, Jarydd, Jordan, and Samuel - and two great-grandchildren: Lucas and Connor.
Gyula was born in Budapest, Hungary, son of Frank and Hulala Marczinovits. He worked for over 15 years at Southgate of Shrewsbury. He loved all the friends he made there, and they became like family to him. A real family man, Julius loved being with his wife and attending his grandchildren's sporting events. Julius was an avid soccer fan and also loved going to Foxwoods, Twin River, and dining out with family and friends.
In January, 1957, Gyula and two other Freedom Fighters were the first Hungarian refugees to settle in the city of Worcester after a national revolt in Hungary. At 19, Gyula and the others were sponsored by the Lutheran Refugee Service and the Trinity Lutheran Church beginning their new lives as Americans. He lived in the area the remainder of his life, thankful for the freedom he chose.
Calling hours will be held at Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln Street, Worcester, Monday, Oct. 25, from 5-8 p.m. The funeral service will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
