Obituary

HONAN, Lillian Gertrude "Gert" (Bonzagni), age 99, of Winthrop, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2010. Gert was the beloved wife of the late William "Bill" Honan. She is survived by her daughters Kenny and her husband Jack McCurdy of Barrington, RI, and Kathleen Honan of Revere, MA., her sons Tony and his wife Jeannette Honan of Minnetonka, MN, Bill Honan Jr. of Annapolis, MD, Stephen and his wife Helen Honan, and Richard and his wife Mary Ellen Honan, both of Winthrop, and her late son Patric Honan. Gert leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Francis “Bud” Bonzagni. Funeral from the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home 210 Winthrop St. WINTHROP, on Saturday at 9am. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Evangelist Church at 10am. Relatives and friends are invited. Interment will be in Winthrop Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Fri. only from 3-8pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Gert’s name to the Winthrop Food Pantry, 222 Bowdoin St, Winthrop MA 02152, or to the Animal Rescue League of Boston, 10 Chandler Street, Boston, MA 02116. Born in Winthrop, MA in 1911, Gert graduated from Winthrop High School. She attended Simmons College and Boston’s Vesper George School of Art graduating in 1935 with a degree in Costume Design. Employed at Slattery’s Department Store in Boston, she provided many of the firm’s newspaper advertising artwork. A lifelong artist, Gert was a founding member of the Winthrop Art Association and hosted many art exhibits at her family's home on Pleasant Street. In the mid 1950’s, Gert and her husband Bill, opened the Holiday Shop in Winthrop Center. This town center hub provided locals with gifts, Christmas trees, flowers and gardening products for many years. Gert is remembered for her joyful curiosity, intellect and contagious love of life. She was a gifted artist, community member, gardener and friend. Above all, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who weaved faith, values, inspiration, optimism and humor into the fabric of her family.
