John J. SweeneyJohn J. Sweeney, 86, of Needham, in whose name the lighting of the Blue Tree on Needham Common was dedicated this year, died Sun. Dec 7, 2003 at the Tippett Hospice House in Needham.Born in Boston she graduated from Boston Latin and Burdett Business College. He was an accountant for Fales Machinery for several years. Following his retirement he worked for the Needham Council on Aging since 1990 until his recent retirement. He served in many capacities for the Council on Aging handling mail delivery, supervising the monthly mailing of the "Compass" newsletter, and bookkeeping and was cosidered indispensible. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II and was discharged as a 1st Lt. He was a member of the American Legion in Dover.Husband of the late Marie (Miele) Sweeney, he is survived by his children John J. “Jack” Sweeney and his wife Elaine of Wayland, Linda Ray of Richmond VA, and Phillip C. Sweeney and his wife Caroline of Mill Valley CA. He is also survived by his sister Mary Graham of Burlington and his grandchildren Daniel, Alyssa and Shaunna Murray, and John J. “Jay” III and Michelle G. Sweeney, and his great granddaughter Bella Marie.Relatives and friends will gather at the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave. Needham on Fri Dec 12 at 9 AM and proceed to a funeral mass in St. Joseph Church Needham at 10 AM. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery in Dover.
