Salem: M. Regina Gastonguay, 102 years of age, died unexpectedly, Sunday, October 17, 2010 at the NSMC Salem Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Angela (Beaulieu) Gastonguay.
Born in Livermore Falls, Maine in 1908, she and her family settled in Beverly in 1919, where she continued her education. Regina was a graduate of Boston University and eventually earned her Masters Degree in Elementary Education. She taught at the Phillips and Endicott Schools from 1950 until her retirement in 1973. She was president of the Salem Teachers Union from 1968 to 1969.
Regina has been a resident of Salem since 1942. A deeply religious and spiritual woman, she was a member of the former St. Joseph Parish and was currently a member of St. James Parish of Salem.
The last of a family of eleven children, she was predeceased by 7 brothers, Hector, Wilfred, Alfred, Herve, Arthur ‘Pete’, George and Emile Gastonguay, 3 sisters, Emilie O’Connor, Elmina St. Pierre, and Blanche Richard. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the Levesque Funeral Home, 163 Lafayette St. [Rt. 114 / 1-A] Salem on Friday, October 22, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for a period of visitation to be followed by her funeral mass in St. James Church, Federal St., Salem at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Beverly.
