John V. McNamara, Jr., 84

John V. McNamara, Jr., 84, a lifelong resident of Foxboro passed away on Wednesday October 13, 2010 at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. He was the beloved husband of Jeannette (Small) McNamara to whom he was wed on October 9, 1948.
Born in Norwood, MA on September 12, 1926 he was a son of the late John V. Sr. and Elizabeth (Orris) McNamara.
John grew up in Foxboro, was educated in Foxboro public schools and was a graduate of Foxboro High School. He faithfully served his country in the United States Navy during WWII and was honorably discharged in September of 1947 with the rank of EM2. His proudest accomplishment while serving in the U.S. Navy was participating in the Atom bomb test at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific.
Mr. McNamara was employed at the Foxboro Co. for over 30 years and retired in 1985 as an Audio Visual Manager. He was also a member of the company’s 25 year club.
A lifelong communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Foxboro, he served the church in his youth as an altar boy and later as an usher for over 60 years. Being a man of deep spiritual belief, Mr. McNamara at one time considered becoming a priest.
John was a former auxiliary police officer and registrar for the Town of Foxboro and was a member of the Foxboro VFW, the Wrentham Sportsman’s Club and the Mansfield Elks.
Affectionately known as “Grampie” by all who knew and loved him, John treasured the wonderful times spent with family and friends. His hobbies included fishing, gardening and being a model train enthusiast. He also loved trips to New Hampshire and to Amish Country.
In addition to his beloved wife of 62 years, he is survived by his devoted daughter Donna M. Moelk and her husband Roger of Foxboro. He was the dear brother of twins Gerry McNamara of Foxboro and Gene McNamara of North Attleboro and Barbara Peatfield of Walpole, Sandra Freites of South Dartmouth and the late Sally Barrett, Carol Wethington and Albert McNamara. He was the adoring Grampie of Sean Moelk of Foxboro and Alyssa Moelk Eatchel and her husband Tyler of Utah. Mr. McNamara is also survived by many cherished nieces, nephews and friends.
His Funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Monday October 18th at 10:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church 58 Carpenter St. Foxboro. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Foxboro.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday October 17th from 4-8 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield.
In lieu of flowers, Mr. McNamara’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to The Mansfield Elks 140 North Main St. Mansfield, MA 02048 or The Doolittle Home 16 Bird St. Foxboro, MA 02035.
