Laconia----Gerard “Jerry” E. Godbout, 85, of 35 Harvard Street, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital on Tuesday, October 5, 2010. He was the widower of Pauline B. (Young) Godbout who died in 2002.
Jerry was born September 12, 1925 in Laconia, N.H., the son of Ernest and Amelia (Levasseur) Godbout. He was a lifelong resident of Laconia and graduated from Laconia High School in 1943.
Jerry served in the U. S. Army during WWII. He worked for two years in the White House as a communications specialist while Dwight D. Eisenhower was president. He worked out of the basement of the White House as a member of the White House Army Signal Agency. Over the years, he had been employed at Gilbert Clock Company, Scott & Williams and was manager and bartender at the Weirs Hotel and also worked at The Sovereign Hotel in Miami, Florida. He owned and operated his own dry cleaning business, owned and operated a gift shop and ten cabins that were across from the Naswa, was owner of Guyer’s Market and was an antique dealer for many years. He also was the manager of Northeast Airline’s Laconia Airport Operation and worked at the seaplane base at the Weirs.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Mark & Carol Godbout and two grandchildren, Nicholas A. Godbout and Liah M. Godbout, all of Laconia; a brother, Leo Godbout, of Johnson City, N.Y. and a sister, Rita Farettra, of Concord. In addition to his wife and his parents, Jerry was predeceased by a sister, Lucille Dow
Calling hours will be held on Friday, October 8, 2010 from 9:00-10:30AM in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane-Simoneau-Paquette Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, N.H.
Following the calling hours, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Blessed Andre Bessette Parish, St. Joseph Church, 30 Church Street, Laconia at 11:00AM.
Burial will follow in the family lot in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Laconia.
