Mary Alice (Mimi) Blake Holmes
August 11, 1921 - September 30, 2010
Born at home in Cohasset, Mimi grew up in Dedham, attending Dexter School, then The Winsor School in Boston. She attended Bryn Mawr College, received a bachelor's degree in Art History from Boston University and a master's degree in Education from Harvard University. She taught French at Derby Academy in Hingham and Special Education in the Franklin, Hull and Cohasset Public Schools.
Mimi loved art and music, nature (especially birds), skiing, hiking, sailing and was an advocate of always having fun. She was an active volunteer in many organizations, including the Fogg Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Boston Harbor Islands. She was a Friend of Webb Park and a generous donor to many non-profit organizations.
She is survived by her son Benjamin Blake, III and daughter-in-law Josette, of Boston; daughters Barbara Porter of Jacksonville, FL; Rosamond (Robin) Blake of Brattleboro, VT; Leslie Jordan and son-in-law Michael Johnson of Denver, CO; and Betsy Shepler and son-in-law Rob of Mayhill, NM. She is also survived by her grandchildren Annabelle Blake of Roxbury; Alexandra Morris of Dorchester; Benjamin Jordan of Denver, CO; Genevra MacPhail of Burlington, VT; Phoebe MacPhail of Sacramento, CA, and Alexander Fredrickson of San Diego, CA; step-daughter Cynthia Davis of Townshend, VT and step-sons Allen Holmes of Hull and Paul Holmes of Quincy. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews in the John Blake family.
Services are to be private. The family requests that instead of flowers, donations be made to a favorite charity in memory of Mimi Holmes.
