Robert Parr Mason , 92 died September 22, 2010 at Pleasant Valley Nursing Home, Derry NH.
The youngest of four children, Bob was born in Methuen, MA on June 2, 1918 to Robert P. Mason, Sr. and Rose (Stocks) Mason. He was a longtime resident of Salem.
Bob graduated from Woodbury High School in Salem and the Burdett School of Business in Boston, MA. He was a US Navy Veteran serving throughout World War II. While stationed at the Great Lakes Training Center, it was he who received the first teletype informing them of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He later served aboard the USS Penguin, a rescue and salvage vessel with the submarine fleet.
Bob was a faithful member of Island Pond Baptist Church in Hampstead, as well as a member of the VFW Post #8546 and the Spicket Lodge #85 in Salem.
Bob owned and operated Mason’s Supermarket in Salem, NH and was part of the family business for over 45 years. After retiring, he served three terms in the NH State Legislature.
Bob loved to travel to see his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also enjoyed “puttering” around his Salem home and was an avid Boston sports fan – especially his beloved Red Sox.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Simone (Auclair) Mason of Salem; his son, Jeffrey and his wife Patricia Mason of Manchester, NH; his daughters, Diane and her husband Mourad Donigian of Elgin, OR; and Jennifer Mason and her fiance’ James Brandon of Marathon, FL; seven grandchildren: Rebekah Labell, Emily Raasch, Aram, & Jared Donigian, Kryslyn Burks, MaryElizabeth & Gregory Mason; eleven great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Monday October 4th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home – 214 Main St, Salem, NH. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 5th at 11:00 am at the Island Pond Baptist Church, 25 North Salem Rd, Hampstead, NH.
