Presley was born in Richmond County on July 24, 1951 to the late Andrew and Pilar Bartolome Gainey, but had traveled the country extensively before settling back in Rockingham. He was proud to have been a member of Rohanen High School class of 1969, and received his bachelors degree in engineering from N.C.
