Obituary

Christopher O. Briggs, 81, of East Freetown formerly of New Bedford, died Thursday November 27, 2003 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Ann M. (Thomas) Briggs.

Born and raised in Dartmouth, the son of the late Charles J. and Ady A. (Wood) Briggs, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Purgatory Church.

Mr. Briggs was formerly employed as a production control manager at the Continental Screw Company until his retirement.

Mr. Briggs served in the U.S. Army with the 350th Infantry Regiment in Italy during World War II and participated in the battles and campaigns of Rome, Arno, North Apennines and Po Valley. He was a recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign ribbon, the Silver Star medal, the Distinguished Unit badge, the Good Conduct medal and the World War II Victory medal. He was a member of the American Legion Post One.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Sandra Haley, and her husband Chuck, of East Freetown and Sharon Pero, and her husband Daniel, of Middleboro; 2 brothers, Clarence C. Briggs and Clifton Briggs, both of Westport; a sister, Edna Briggs of Dartmouth; 5 grandchildren, Christopher Haley, Gregory Haley, Brian Haley and his wife Jennifer, Danielle Pero and DesireƩ Pero; and several nieces and nephews.He was the brother of the late Raymond E. Briggs, Sarah J. Briggs, Lena Gilchrest, and Charles J. Briggs, Jr.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New BedfordMonday December 1, 2003 at 9:30 AM.Divine Liturgy at Our Lady of Purgatory Church at 10:30 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Sunday November 30, 2003 from 4-8 PM. Burial with military honors will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
