Obituary

Whitman - Richard C. “Dick” Perkins, 80 a resident of Whitman for 47 years died Monday September 6 in his Whitman home and surrounded by his loving family after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of 57 years to Ethel G “Gloria" (Shenett) Perkins.

Born and raised in Middleboro he was the son of the late Jesse C. and Lillian H. Perkins and a graduate of Middleboro High School.

Dick was a proud member of the National Guard and veteran of the Korean War serving in the US Army from 1951 to1952.

Before entering the service Dick worked at George E. Keith Shoe of Middleboro, and after the service when he returned to the work force he worked many years at Boston Gear Works. In later years he was a custodian at the Maquan School of Hanson and then Silver Lake High where he retired in 1992.

He was a member of the American Legion of Whitman, and enjoyed feeding the birds as well as watching them at his feeders. He spent many enjoyable hours outdoors in his vegetable garden but his greatest joy came from the time spent with his family and especially his 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife Gloria he is survived by his loving children Donna Mattson and her husband John of Kingston, Allen Perkins of Whitman and Dana Perkins and his wife Rhonda of Whitman, his sisters Peg Alum of Pembroke, Elaine Harte of Abington, and Lillian Hammond of Oak Bluffs. He is also survived by his grandchildren Terri, Christina, Bryan, Kimberly, Kyle, Samantha, and Mallory, his great grandchildren Andrew, Emily and Mia, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Robert and Marion Perkins.

His services will be held Friday September 10 at 10 AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman. Burial will follow in the Northville Cemetery, East Bridgewater. Visiting hours will be held Thursday September 9 from 4 – 8 PM. Donations in his name may be made to the Hospice of the South Shore 100 Bay State Drive / Box 859060 Braintree, MA 02185.
