George "Sosky" Sochovka, 84, formerly of Taylor and Clarks Summit, died Sunday at Mercy Hospital. He was a resident of the Gino Merli Veterans Center, Scranton, and retired employee of Chamberlain serving more then 25 years.
Son of the late John and Anna Baraga Sochovka, he was a graduate of Taylor High School, class of 1944, where he participated in both football and basketball. His athletic honors include All-Scholastic in both football and basketball. He attended Temple University on a football scholarship. He was a veteran of World War II and served with the military police stationed in Germany.
George coached biddy basketball and was a Boy Scout leader for many years. He enjoyed golfing and attending sporting events of his nieces and nephews.
While a resident of the Gino Merli Center, he was a member of the choir and led the Friday prayer group. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church in Taylor.
Surviving are two sisters, Frances Sochovka, Clark Summit; and Velma Cuny and husband, Tom, Virginia; two brothers, Thomas Sochovka and wife, Barbara, Taylor; and Andrew Lenns, Scranton; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Sochovka, Moscow.
He was also preceded in death by four brothers, John, Albert, Carl and Joseph; two sisters, Anna Sochovka and Mary Czubowicz; and three sisters-in-law, Mary, Anna and Mary Lenns.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Michael P. Glinsky Funeral Home Inc., 129 Grant St., Olyphant, with Mass at 10 a.m. in Divine Mercy Parish, Davis Street, Scranton. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.
