Mary E. (St. Germain) Stellato, 75, of Mattapoisett died Friday September 3, 2010 at McCarthy Care Center in Sandwich after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Woonsocket, RI, the daughter of the late Eugene and Loretta (Coffey) St. Germain, she lived in Worcester for many years before moving to Mattapoisett in 1969.
She was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church.
Mrs. Stellato began her long career with the New Bedford Public School Department in 1969 first as a home economics teacher at New Bedford High School and Keith Junior High School and then as the chairperson of the Home Economics Department. She later was the head of the New Bedford Pregnant and Parenting Teen Program until her retirement.
Mrs. Stellato received her Bachelor's degree from Framingham State College and her Master's degree from Fitchburg State College.
She had been a volunteer for the Junior Achievement program and Project Grow at Center School in Mattapoisett.
Survivors include four children, John M. Stellato, Jr. and his wife Rita, James J. Stellato and his wife Lucy, and Eugene F. Stellato and his wife Cindy, all of Mattapoisett, and Camille A. Yergeau and her husband Roger of Fairhaven; her siblings, Jeannette Gabaree of New Hampshire, Eugene, John, Robert, and William St. Germain, all of the Worcester area; eight grandchildren, Katherine, Michael, Collin, Sarah, T.J., Alyson, Nathaniel, and Evan; and many nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late James St. Germain.
In accordance with her wishes, her remains were received by Harvard Medical School for anatomical research. Her Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday September 11, 2010 at 10 AM at St. Anthony's Church. Visiting hours are omitted.
