GLOUCESTER: Ronald T. “Ronnie” Marques, 76, of 10 Dale Avenue passed away on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 following an extended illness.
He was the husband of Carole (Surrette) Marques.
Born in Gloucester on July 7, 1934, he was the son of the late Manuel and Edith C. (Rose) Marques. He was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and a graduate of the Gloucester High School class of 1952, where he played varsity football and baseball.
Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in February of 1959 at the rank of Corporal.
Ronnie spent thirty years working as a fisherman and longshoreman. He was a #1 lumper.
He was an avid sports fan, an animal lover, especially his dog, Mia, and a great cook. He was a talented woodworker and enjoyed making lawn ornaments and various novelty items. He loved to fly kites and drink martinis. Ronnie had movie-star good looks and was charming and charismatic with a great sense of humor. A good joke was never lost on him. He was well liked and had many friends. He leaves his close friends, “The Beach Boys” from Central Grammar Apartments, Ed Murch, Vito Asaro, Sam Nicastro and Jim Murray.
He is also survived by his children, Theresa, Jason and Ronald Marques, stepdaughters, Suzette, wife of Donald Jacobs and Marcia O’Brien, and stepson, Daniel O’Brien; grandchildren, Samantha, wife of Kevin Fogerty, Savannah Jacobs and Nicholas Randazza-O’Brien, great-grandchildren, David and Norah; his nieces and nephews, Cynthia Wicklow, Lisa Lumardo and Manuel Marques, III. He was also predeceased by his sister, Edith Jean Gleason, his twin brother, Manuel Marques, Jr.; stepson, David E. O’Brien, Jr. and niece, Debra Marques O’Leary.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday morning in the Our Lady of Good Voyage Church at 9:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours.
