James F. Dunn,of Canton , died Tuesday afternoon, August 25, 2010 at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was 98.
Born, raised and educated in the Roxbury section of the City of Boston he was the son of the late James F. and Annie (McGovern) Dunn. He was a resident of Canton for over 50 years moving there from Boston . A graduate of Boston College High School with the Class of 1930 he received his Degree in Social Work from Boston College in 1934.
Mr. Dunn worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the Department of Public Welfare and retired as an Administrator after over 45 years of service.
He had served as a Staff Sergeant with the Army's 555th Air Corps Base Division during WW II.
A longtime communicant of Saint John the Evangelist Parish in Canton he enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing and gardening.
Mr. Dunn was predeceased by his wife, Mary V. (Stapleton) Dunn, his sister, Anne McElroy and his brothers, Bernard and Gordon Dunn.
He is survived by his daughters, Veronica Doherty and her husband, Michael of Mansfield, Susan Tamul and her husband, Edward of Norton, Anne Adami and her husband, William of DE and Mary Dunn of Canton and his sons, James F. Dunn and his wife, Susan of CT and Joseph Dunn and his wife, Carmen of FL. He is also survived by his 17 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Funeral Services in celebration of his life at the Roache - Pushard Family Home for Funerals, 210 Sherman Street , Canton , on Monday at 9 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Gerard Majella Church at 10 a.m. Interment with Military Honors will follow at the Canton Corner Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home of Sunday from 4-7 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Saint Gerard's Outreach Program, 1860 Washington Street , Canton , MA 02021 .
