Joseph Hervey Bernard, a lifelong resident of Andover and beloved husband of 52 years of the late Janice A. (Downey) Bernard, died at the Lawrence General Hospital on Monday, August 23, 2010. He was 81 years old.
Born in Andover on March 23, 1929, he was the beloved son of the late George and Rose (Gaudet) Bernard. Joseph was a career veteran, honorably discharged after 22 years of serving in the Army including the Vietnam and Korean Wars. While serving in the Army, Mr. Bernard attained the rank of Supply Sergant. He was an active member of the DAV in Andover, serving as past treasurer. In civilian life, Mr. Bernard worked as a custodian for the Andover Schools and also for the U. S. Postal Service. In his spare time, Joe loved to play cards with his friends, enjoyed going to yard sales and spending time with his grandchildren.
He will be sorely missed by his beloved children; Debra J. and her significant-other Gary Swenson, of Lawrence, Michael J. Bernard of Andover, Stacey A. Barnes of Andover, Stephen E. Bernard and his significant-other Liz Pierce, both of Salem, MA, Kelley M. and her husband Albert Savastano of Lawrence and Scott C. and his wife Holly Bernard of North Andover, fifteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, siblings; Amelia Candela of Minnesota, Joseph Leo and his wife Marie Bernard of Andover, John A. and his wife Amy Bernard of Florida and Richard and his wife Carole Bernard of Andover, sisters-in-law; Patricia A. Brown of Andover and Carol Ann Downey of Florida and many nieces and nephews.
His funeral mass was celebrated in St. Augustine Church, 43 Essex Street, Friday, August 27, 2010, at 10 AM. Many relatives and friends respectfully attended. Calling hours were held in the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main Street, Andover, Thursday, August 26, 2010, from 4 to 8 PM. Burial was in Spring Grove Cemetery, Andover.
