Obituary

Helen G. Barber-Fortes, 92, passed away at the Norwood Hospital on August 21st, 2010. She was born in Boston on July 14th, 1918 to her parents Irving and Ellen (Johnson) Robertson. Helen was raised and educated in Roxbury. She has been a resident of Medford for the past 32 years. She worked as a secretary for the Boston Housing Authority for 20 years. After her retirement, Helen began a new career as the Assistant Activities Director at the Salvation Army in Cambridge, retiring at the age of 83. She was a member of the Salvation Army Silver Threads Club and the Kulani Club. She is survived by her children; Gayle Morgan and her husband Michael of Nashport, Ohio and Beverly Cox of Sharon; by her grandchildren Michael, Alanna and Chandra; by her great grandson Austen; and by her sister Edyth Robinson of New York. Along with her parents, Helen was predeceased by her husband William Fortes and by her siblings; Eleanor Underwood, Doris Patterson and Irving “Buddy” Robertson. Relatives & friends are invited to attend her funeral from the Breslin Funeral Home, 610 Pleasant St., Malden on Friday August 27th at 8 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated in the Immaculate Conception Church Chapel, 600 Pleasant St., Malden at 9 AM. Services will conclude with interment in Forest Hills Cemetery in Boston. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Thursday August 26th from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
