TEWKSBURY - Richard C. "Dick" MacFarland, age 77 died Saturday, August 21, at the Winchester Hospital following a courageous year long battle with declining health. He was the beloved husband of Celine (Gargan) MacFarland, with whom he had celebrated a 22nd wedding anniversary this past November 28th.
He was born in Boston, September 30, 1932, a son of the late Reginald and Agnes (Quinlan) MacFarland, and raised in the Mission Hill and Brighton sections of Boston. He lived in Malden for many years, before moving to the Patton Green community in Tewksbury in 1991.
He enlisted into the U.S. Army and served for six years with the Occupation Forces in Germany. He was honorably discharged during the Korean War era.
He worked as a driver for the Spry Moving company in Woburn, and was a member of the AFL-CIO Teamsters Local 82 in Quincy. Since his Teamsters retirement twelve years ago, he had worked as a custodian for St. Mary's Parish in the Pinehurst section of Billerica.
He was a member of the American Legion in Watertown and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Malden.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three children, Carol Lydon and her husband Timothy of West Roxbury, Steven MacFarland of Norwood, and Regina Bailey and her husband Richard of Augusta, ME; his beloved grandson and "the apple of his eye," Michael MacFarland of Norwood; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Brenda Hunt of Hyde Park, and Lois Murphy and her husband John of Hot Springs, AK; a brother and two sisters-in-law, John "Jack" Smith and his wife Barbara of Saugus, and Claire MacFarland of Rockland, MA; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also brother of the late Robert MacFarland.
His funeral was celebrated Thursday Aug. 26, in St. Mary's Church, Pinehurst. Burial with Army Honors followed at St. Joseph's Cemetery, W. Roxbury. Wemorials to St. Mary's Church, 796 Boston Rd., Billerica, MA 01821 or the Winchester Hospital Foundation, 611 Main St., Winchester, MA 01890-9944 will be appreciated. His family is especially grateful to the Doctors, Nurses, and Staff of the Winchester Hospital for their outstanding care to Richard during the last year.
