LOWELL—Susan E. Leggat, of Lowell, the Special Events Coordinator for the Lowell National Historic Park, died November 22nd on her 56th birthday, after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
She was born in Lowell, on November 22, 1947, a daughter of Doris R. and the late W. Douglas Leggat. She graduated from Lowell High School in 1965, where she received the Daughters of the American Revolution Award, and from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, in 1970.
Ms. Leggat spent most of her career in Lowell working as an organizer with the Regatta Festival Committee, several political campaigns and as an aide to Congressman Paul Cronin. In 1980, she joined the National Park Service, as Special Events Coordinator, and has worked at the Lowell National Historic Park for the past 23 years, where she is best known for her work on the Lowell Folk Festival.
Sue worked tirelessly on many civic causes and served on many local boards. She was the first woman President on the Board of Directors for the Kiwanis Club of greater Lowell and the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lowell, where she was still a board member at the time of her death. She was also a founder and current trustee for the Lowell Festival Foundation. She served as vice chair of the Lowell Office of Cultural Affairs, vice chair of the Lowell Cultural Council and as a board member of the Brush Art Gallery and the International Institute of Lowell.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by a sister: Janet, of Lowell; a brother and sister-in-law: John and Ann Leggat, of Hamilton; two nieces: Tory Leggat, of Boulder, CO; and Sarah, and her husband Michael, Tolerico, of Denver, CO; a nephew and his wife: Andrew and Jennifer Leggat, of Phoenix, AZ; also several cousins.
Her Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 28th, at 1 PM at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, Lowell, to which relatives and friends are invited. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lowell, the Lowell Festival Foundation or the charity of one’s choice.
