Obituary

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL— Edward W. Martin, 85, of Port Charlotte, Fla. and formerly of Gloucester, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010, after a brief illness.
He is survived by his wife of many years, Helen (Oliver) Martin; and was predeceased by his first wife, Barbara (Sweeney) Martin.
Born on Aug. 20, 1924, in Gloucester, the son of the late Frank and Mary (Cardos) Martin, Ed made the port of Gloucester his home for most of his life, until moving to Florida after retirement.
Upon graduation from Gloucester High School in 1943, he joined the United States Navy and proudly served his country.
After returning home to Gloucester, he worked for Gorton’s for 43 years until his retirement.
Ed served for several years as a union representative for "Local 15," at Gorton’s, and also worked as a bartender at the Gloucester Fraternity Club, where he was a lifelong member.
His favorite pastimes included softball, bowling, and golf; but his lifelong passion, by far, was playing cards with his many friends.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two sons, Edward Martin, Jr., husband of Linda, Frank Martin, husband of Mary Christine; along with his grandchildren, Edward Martin, III, Tracy Palazola, and Lori C. Martin. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Carol Parsons, Pat Vidaia, Bob Saunders, Joe Saunders, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, David, and all five of his brothers, Shank, Everett, Alfred “Clicky”, Clarence “Sonny Boy”, and Melvin.
His funeral service will be held on Tuesday morning in the Calvary Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours.
