Obituary

Loring MacKenzie Bailey of Jerry Browne Road, Mystic, died peacefully at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London on August 15, 2010. He was 96.

Born May 26, 1914 in Newton, Massachusetts, he was the son of Reginald Austin and Pearl Bailey.

Loring was predeceased by Dorothy Lawson Bailey, his wife of 66 years, in 2009; and, their only child, Loring (Ring) M. Bailey, Jr., Specialist 4th class in the U.S. Army who served in Vietnam where he died in 1970.

Loring grew up in the Boston area and went to school at Brookline High School. As a nine-year-old boy, he experienced high adventures in Cuba where his father oversaw the construction of a sugar cane factory. Loring studied mechanical design at the Laurel Institute, a division of the Massachusetts Institutes of Technology. In 1940, he joined Electric Boat in Groton as a ship design planner. He held succeeding positions of increasing responsibility at--as he liked to call it-- "The Boat Company". Loring retired in 1979 as a Procurement Engineer for the Trident Programs.

Loring and Dorothy during their lives and professional careers became beloved friends of many and an icon of a long and loving marriage. They moved to StoneRidge Retirement Community in 2005 after 60 years in their home on Pequot Trail. Friends and acquaintances remember Loring for his sharp intellect and brilliant memory. He was a source of endless stories on Maritime and American Revolutionary War history, and Cuba. Though, he was a delightful conversationalist on almost any subject.

Loring has no known surviving relatives. For many years, his friends Nancy Hutson and Ian Williams, and Elizabeth and Peter Sorensen were his informal family. They spent many happy hours with Loring and Dorothy. Loring established prizes in Ring's and Dorothy's names at Pine Point School where Ring was a student and Dorothy taught. It is suggested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to: The Loring M. Bailey Jr. Scholarship Fund at Pine Point School, St. Mark's Episcopal Church General Fund or the Stonington Visiting Nurse Association.

A memorial service will be held in September.
