BEVERLY: Myrtle C. “Myrt” (Day) Smith, 79, formerly of Essex, died Monday, August 9, 2010 at the Beverly Hospital following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Joseph S. Smith, who died in March of 1989.
Born in Ipswich on August 17, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Norman L. and Josephine (Burnham) Day. She was a resident of Essex for most of her life before moving to Beverly in 1999.
Myrt worked for many years for Goucher’s of Essex and later for the Ipswich Shellfish Company. She was a longtime member and past-master of the Essex Grange.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Paula M. and James Stephens of Hamilton, a son and daughter-in-law, Dana and Pon Smith of Biloxi, MS, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Norman L. and Hope Day of Lafayette Hill, PA, and Daniel and Mary Day of Goodyear, AZ, six grandchildren, Daniel Stephens of Salem, NH, Emily Brown of Beverly, Amanda Stephens and Jessica Stephens both of Hamilton, Danny Smith of Leesville, LA, and Carrol Quave of Ocean Springs, MS; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Augustus J. “Gus” Smith, an infant daughter, Mary Josephine Smith and her brother and sister-in-law, Weymouth and Marion Day.
Her funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 21st in the First Church of Wenham at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Friday in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot Street, Beverly from 4 – 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the American Heart Assoc., 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or to the American Lung Assoc., 460 Totten Pond Rd., Ste. 400, Waltham, MA 02451-1991. Interment will be held in the Spring Street Cemetery, Essex.
