Obituary

Eugene (Gene) J. Dragon of Londonderry, NH, formerly from Northborough, MA died Monday, August 9, 2010 after a short illness. Gene, born March 11, 1928 in Northampton, MA, was the son of Arthur and Anna (Fournier) Dragon. He joined the U.S. Merchant Marines at the age of 16 and served in the Marine Corp during World War II, stationed in China. Following his military service he graduated from Monson Academy and attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Following school he was Chief Surveyor for the Dept of Public Works during the construction of Route 2. After receiving his Civil Engineering Degree, Gene spent 23 years as Vice President at Granger Contracting, followed by 10 years at Perini Corporation in Framingham, MA as Assistant Division Manager. After his retirement, Gene worked for 13 years, as well as played golf at Juniper Hill Golf Course. Gene was a disabled veteran and member of the DAV and the American Legion Picard Post in Northborough, MA. He was also an avid numismatist and was past president of the Worcester County Numismatist Assoc. He loved playing golf with friends and went on to win the Super Senior Club Championship one year. While his children were growing up, Gene found enjoyment in taking his family on ski trips all over New England. He was an avid skier, skiing Tuckerman’s Ravine in NH on a few occasions.
Gene is survived by his beloved wife of fifty seven years, Norma M. (Benson) Dragon; two daughters: Debra Marino and her husband Anthony: Elizabeth Court and her husband David – all of Londonderry, NH; two sons: Dana Dragon and his companion, Gay Michaeles; Jeffrey Dragon and his wife Mary – all of Northborough, MA; eleven grandchildren: Melissa, Jeremy and Jennifer Dragon, Anthony, Matthew, Nicholas and Marcie Marino, Matthew Dragon, and Timothy, Sarah and Rachel Court. He is also survived by one brother, Richard E. Dragon of Easthampton, MA, and predeceased by a sister, Marie Bronson and a brother, Arthur Dragon.
A memorial gathering was held on Sunday, August 15, 2010 from 4-8 pm at the American Legion Post, 402 West Main Street, Northborough, MA. Upon Gene’s request there were no calling hours or funeral service. His ashes will be kept at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Agawam, MA alongside his brother, Arthur. The Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry, NH is handling the arrangements.
