Obituary

SALEM - Gordon L. “Sonny” Greaves, 79, of Salem, died Thursday, August 5, 2010 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers.

Born in Cambridge, he was the son of the late Lyric and Beatrice (Hayes) Greaves. Raised and educated in Salem, he was a graduate of Salem High School.

Mr. Greaves was a Korean Conflict veteran and served with the Marine Corps from 1951 to 1954 and attained the rank of corporal.

Sonny was employed as a bartender for over 30 years. He worked at Slade’s, then at the Professional and Businessmens Club and later, at Tim’s Tavern, all in Boston. He then worked at the former Polish Falcons, Nest #188 in Salem, until his retirement in the early 1990's.

He is survived by 2 sons, Gordon L. Greaves, Jr. of Boston, Peter M. Greaves of Brockton, 3 daughters, Deborah Bynoe of Salem, and with whom he resided, Donna Greaves of Hawaii, Marina Buchanan of Belmont, 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 2 brothers, Merrill B. Greaves of Salem, Richard O. Greaves of Peabody, and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Muriel Collins and Ralph L. Greaves.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at 10:30 am at the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, St. Peter St., Salem. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. There are no visiting hours. For those who desire, donations may be made in his memory to the Mass General North Shore Center for Outpatient Care, 102-104 Endicott St., Danvers, MA 01923 or to the Kaplan Family Hospice House, c/o the Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St. Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
