John Calvin Miller, Sr.,92, of Kroontje Health Care Center, Blacksburg, Virginia, passed away Monday, August 2, 2010.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Laola (Sharp) Miller.
He leaves two daughters, Joanne Pearson and her husband Ronald of Blacksburg,VA. and Patricia Miller of Manteca, CA., and one son, John C. Miller, Jr., and his wife Karen, of Stannard, Vt; five grandchildren, Stacey Pearson, Thomas Pearson, Sarah (Miller) Lamarre-Vincent and her husband, Nathan, Kristen (Miller) Carbonetti and her husband, Ben, Matthew Miller, and three great grandchildren, Nikki Pearson, Heather Pearson, and Cormac Lamarre-Vincent.
John was born in Worcester, son of Allan B. and Jessie (Goodwin) Miller.
He was predeceased by a brother, Warren and a sister, Shirley.
He lived in Worcester during his childhood, moving to Charlton when he was in high school. He lived all his adult life in Charlton, until he moved to Blacksburg, VA. seven years ago.
He graduaed from Charlton High School and received a B.S. in Wildlife Management from Massachusetts State College in Amherst, where he was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity.
John was a Registered Land Surveyor and Registered Professional Engineer in MA.
He was an inspector and resident engineer with Fay, Spofford and Thorndike, Consulting Engineers for a number of years on highway projects including, the Mass. Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, and Connecticut Turnpike, and redevelopment projects in Worcester, Boston, and Portland, ME. He had a private survey business in Charlton for more than 50 years.
John served as an elected officer for the Town of Charlton in many capacities; 29 years on the Board of Assessors, 15 years on the Planning Board, 5 years on the Recreation Committee, and 6 years on the Bay Path Regional Vocational High School Committee. In 1972, he was appointed to the Central MA. Planning Commission. In the 1960's, he was a candidate for the Massachusetts House of Representatives.
John was a member of the Charlton Federated Church.He was also a member of the Massachusetts State Grange for 75 years, and a 50 year member of the Quinebaug Lodge of Masons,the Grand Lodge of Masons, and the Order of the Eastern Star-Clara Barton Chapter .
The Funeral will be 10 AM, Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at The Federated Church of Charlton, Main Street. Burial will be in West Ridge Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
