Visiting Hours will be held in the J. Frank Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street, (Rte 123) Brockton Monday 4-8pm. His Funeral Mass will be Wednesday January 30, 2002 at 9:30am in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Carbondale, Pennsylvania. Burial in Old Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Obituary Information
Joseph B. Scalzo, MD died Friday at the Caritas Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton. Dr. Scalzo had retired in the year 2000 after having practiced medicine from his office in Elmwood for 53 years, during which he was affiliated with Good Samaritan Hospital.
He was born in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, on January 8, 1913, son of the late Joseph B. and Maria (Pizzuti) Scalzo. He attended the University of Scranton, where he was a swimming and diving champion. He studied at Loyola University Medical School in Chicago, and graduated in 1943, from the University of Kansas College of Physicians and Surgeons. His internship was at St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh, NY and between 1943-1948 he was a resident at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffren NY. From 1951-1953 he was a Captain in the 7th Calvary Division of the Army Medical Corp, serving in Korea and Japan. In 1953 he returned to his practice in Elmwood, where he treated several generations of patients from Plymouth County.
Dr. Scalzo is survived by his wife Lucrezia (Fotia) Scalzo of Brockton, his son Joseph B. Scalzo, III of Brockton and his daughter Anne Scalzo-McNeil of Elmwood and her husband Donald C. McNeil, his sister Mary Mattie of Bridgewater and his grandson, Donald Justin McNeil of Elmwood.
