Mary E. Shurtleff, 84

Dateline: Mansfield, MA

Mary E. (Hickey) Shurtleff, 84, of Mansfield passed away peacefully on Sunday August 1, 2010 at the Epoch Senior Healthcare in Norton. She was the beloved wife of Russell H. Shurtleff to whom she was wed for 63 years.
Born in Hingham, MA on October 21, 1925, she was a daughter of the late John W. and Eleanor E. (Carney) Hickey.
Mary grew up in Hingham and was a 1943 graduate of Rockland High School. She had made her home in Mansfield for the past 13 years and had formerly resided in Hollis, Maine for 10 years and previously in Wilmington for over 25 years.
A retired assembler, Mrs. Shurtleff had been employed at Data Metrics in Wilmington for 10 years before retiring in 1987. She had formerly worked for many years at the American Mutual Insurance Co. in Wakefield.
Mary was a former member of the Wilmington Congregational Church, where she was a member of the church choir. She loved singing and was a former member of the Silver Song Birds in Mansfield. While living in Mansfield, along with her husband, she enjoyed attending functions at the Mansfield Council on Aging. She also possessed a talent for knitting, crocheting, tatting, hard crochet and loved working with her hands.
In addition to her beloved husband she is survived by her devoted children Richard Shurtleff and his wife Eileen of Mansfield and Kathleen Steinem and her husband Robert of Colrain. She was the dear sister of Edward Hickey of Hanson, Paul Hickey of Hanover, Robert Hickey of Florida and the late Alice Kalwicz, John Hickey and Francis Hickey. Mrs. Shurtleff is also survived by her cherished 6 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Friday August 6th at 11:00 A.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield. Burial will follow in the Spring Brook Cemetery, Mansfield.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday August 5th from 5-8 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, Mary’s family has requested that donations in her memory be made to the Patients Activity Fund at Epoch of Norton 184 Mansfield Ave. Norton, MA 02766.
