Richard E. "Soupy" Campbell, a 50 year resident of Somerville and formerly of Charlestown, died on Monday, July 26, 2010, at Spaulding Hospital of Cambridge following a lengthy illness. He was 74 years old.
Soupy was born in Boston on August 2, 1935, to the late Daniel E. and Maude (Davidson) Campbell. He grew up in Charlestown where he attended Boston Public Schools and graduated from Charlestown High School. He enlisted into the United States Marine Corps on September 29, 1953. He served his country during the Korean Conflict and was discharged as a Corporal on September 28, 1956. Dick worked for more than 25 years as a truck driver for Brinks Company and was a retired member of The Teamsters Union Local No. 25. He also worked for 17 years at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston as an administrator in their security department. Soupy has been a member and a 31 year bar manager at The Somerville American Legion Post No. 19. He is also a member of the Somerville Disabled American Veterans Post. He also enjoyed golfing, playing softball and deep sea fishing.
Dick is the beloved husband of 49 years to Priscilla M. (Callahan) Campbell. He is the devoted father of Rick Campbell and his wife Stephanie of Natick, Scott Campbell and his wife Barbara of Wakefield, Joanne (Campbell) Spilman and her husband Ron of Saugus, David Campbell of Somerville and Larry Murphy and his wife Marianne of Melrose. He is the loving Papa to Michael, Ashley, Brittany, Alyssa, Hannah, Alex and Zachary. He is the beloved brother of Daniel Campbell of Charlestown, Muriel Davis of Medford, Ralph Campbell of Maryland and the late Lawrence Campbell and Steven Campbell.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Dick's Funeral on Friday, July 30, 2010, at 8:30 a.m. from The Carr Funeral Home, 1159 Main Street, Melrose, followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Catherine's Church, 185 Summer Street, Somerville, at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden. Visiting hours will be on Thursday, July 29, 2010, from 3 to 8 p.m.
