Obituary

PEABODY: Dorothea M. McCarthy, 98, formerly of Boston, died Wednesday, November 18, 2009 in the Rosewood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Peabody.

Born in Lawrence on July 31, 1911 she was the daughter of the late Joseph F. and Margaret (Sullivan) McCarthy. She was a graduate of Newton public schools and attended Boston University.

Dorothea resided in Boston for most of her life. She was employed by the Federal Government as a director of personnel for various government agencies. She belonged to many organizations but among her favorite were, Boston League of Women Voters, Friends of the Public Garden, The Browning Society and the Friends of the Boston Public Library.

Dorothea was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and up until last year was still doing crossword puzzles to keep her busy. Above all spending time with her family and friends was the most important of all to her.

She is survived by her two nieces, Marie L. Schena and her husband, Robert of Haverhill, and Martha Gross of Vienna, ME, eight loving great-nieces and nephews and twelve great-great nieces and nephews.

Dorothea's funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday in the All Saints Church, 120 Bellevue Ave., Haverhill at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. Interment will be privately held in the St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Lawrence. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St., Bldg. 9, Lawrence, MA 01843.
