Scott E. Berry, Sr., 86, died Monday, May 25, 2009 in the Hannah Duston Healthcare Center in Haverhill. He was the husband of the late Catherine E. (Linehan) Berry who died in September 2001.
Born in Salem, MA on December 30, 1922, he was the son of the late Scott S. and Helen E. (Dorrian) Berry. He had resided in Salem and Boston before moving to Haverhill in 1945. He was a graduate of Salem public schools and graduated with a degree in Engineering and Management from Northeastern University in Boston. A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he served in New Guinea, East Indies, Papua and Bismarck Archipelago and had received several medals, including the American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, American Campaign Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 8 Bronze Stars. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant on July 5, 1945.
Mr. Berry was employed as the Director of Food Service for the Haverhill public school system for many years before retiring in 1985. He had also once worked as a research scientist for the Continental Can Co. in Chicago and as a chemist and plant manager for the Haverhill Box Board Co. in Bradford. He was a former member of the Haverhill Rotary Club and a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church. He also served on the Board of Director's of several local banks.
He is survived by two daughters and two sons-in-law, Patricia B. and Norman E. Sherman of Reading and Mary E. and Richard P. Langlois of Bradford, a son and daughter-in-law, Scott E., Jr. and Darlene Berry of Haverhill, five grandchildren, Heather and Alison Langlois both of Bradford, Kimberly and Scott Michael Berry and Michelle Hutchins all of Haverhill, four great-grandchildren, two brothers, Stuart Berry of Malden and Robert and his wife, Joanne Berry of Beverly and several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by a brother, Walter Berry.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday in St. John the Baptist Church, Lincoln Ave., Haverhill at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday in the Linnehan-Grondin Funeral Home, 129 Kenoza Avenue, Haverhill from 4 - 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942. Interment will be held in St. James Cemetery, Haverhill.
