HAVERHILL: Arlene A. (Kelleher) Maroney, 95, a lifelong resident of Haverhill, died peacefully March 20, 2009 at Penacook Place with her family by her side. She was the wife of the late J. Edward Maroney who died in 1962
Born in Haverhill on November 5, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Timothy J. and Ella Rose (Gill) Kelleher. Arlene graduated from Haverhill High School in 1931 and went on to Bridgewater Teachers College, now Bridgewater State College, graduating in 1935. She was very active in athletics, servings as president of the Women's Athletic Association and played field hockey, baseball, track, tennis and basketball. She was captain of both the tennis and basketball teams. Upon graduation Arlene was a middle school teacher for 26 years working at Walnut Square School, Tilton School, and Albert B. Consentino School until retiring in 1979.
Arlene was an avid reader, loved to listen to music and enjoyed participating in and watching sports. She was a member of the Saint James Sodality, Haverhill Women's Club and the Massachusetts Teachers Association. Above all her favorite thing was being with her family.
She is survived by her four children and six grandchildren, J. Edward Maroney, Jr. and his wife, Roseanne of Atkinson, NH, Timothy J. Maroney and his wife, Terry and their daughter, Lindsay of Bradford, Michael J. Maroney and his wife, Michelle Watts and their daughters, Nicole and Colleen of Haverhill, and Maureen (Maroney) McDermott and her husband, Paul and their sons, Ryan, Michael and Kevin of Jamestown, RI. She is also survived by two sister-in-laws Margaret Maroney of Bradford and Patricia Kelleher of Wakefield and her caregiver and friend, Ana Gichimu and many nieces and nephews. She is also pre-deceased by her brother, Dr. Timothy "Joe" Kelleher and her sister, Doris (Kelleher) Donovan.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday in the St. James Parish, Winter Street, Haverhill at 10 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday in the Linnehan-Grondin Funeral Home, 129 Kenoza Ave., Haverhill from 3- 5 and 6 - 9 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the St. James Parish Building Fund, 6 Cottage St., Haverhill or to the Penacook Employee Fund, 150 Water Street, Haverhill MA, 01830. Interment will be held in St. James Cemetery, Haverhill.
