Obituary

Frederick William Gibson, a resident of Canton formerly of Stoughton and a World War II Veteran of the United States Army passed away on Sunday July 18, 2010 after a brief illness at The Harrington House in Walpole, Massachusetts. He was 93 years old and the beloved husband of the late Virginia F. ( Fama ) Gibson. He is survived by his loving daughter Virginia E. “ Dolly “ Gibson of Canton and his two brothers, Robert Gibson of Portland, Oregon and Richard W. Gibson of West Bridgewater. Other survivors include, many nieces, nephews, great - nieces and great - nephews. He was also preceded in death by his three sisters, Violet Gibson, Marion Brides, Ann Runzo and his brother William Gibson.

Born February 1, 1917 in Stoughton, Massachusetts he was a son to the late William J. and Annie Gibson. He attended Stoughton Public Schools. Mr. Gibson proudly served his country as a private in the United States Army during World War II. He attended and was a an active member of the First Congregational Church of Stoughton, United Church Of Christ. He was a former Deacon at the church as well. After service to his country, he had a very lengthy work history. He was the proud owner/ operator of both the Modern Cab Co. in Canton and Jim’s Variety Store also in Canton. He also was a front desk clerk at the former Savini’s Rt. 138 Motel in Easton and more recently was a shipper / receiver at Draper Brothers Mills Manufacturing Firm in Canton and also was employed as a cleaning specialist with The Bank Of Canton.

His hobbies included watching Golf tournaments, playing cards, attending horse and dog races, playing the drums and he was an avid sports fan and enjoyed the Boston Red Sox very much.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday July 21, 2010 from 4 – 8 P.M. in The Sheehan, Lowe & Powers Funeral Home, 115 Monk Street, Stoughton. His funeral service will be held on Thursday July 22, 2010 at 11 A.M. from the First Congregational Church Of Stoughton, United Church Of Christ, 76 Pierce Street, Stoughton. The Reverend Jean Niven Lenk, officiating. Burial will follow in Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton. Flowers are welcome and donations can also be made in Fred’s memory to the First Congregational Church Of Stoughton, United Church Of Christ, 76 Pierce Street, Stoughton, MA 02072.
