Col(ret) Daniel Alexander MacDonald Jr. (1918-2010) died in Marina di Massa, (Tuscany) Italy on July 14, 2010. Col MacDonald was born in Arlington, Massachusetts in 1918. He attended the University of Alabama and played for the Crimson Tide until he sustained a football injury. Upon his graduation with a degree in Engineering, he served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1962. During WWII, he was active in the North African and Italian campaigns with the 92nd Engineer Regiment seeing combat action at Anzio, Monte Cassino, Gothic Line, Futa Pass, and crossing the River Po into Northern Italy. He became Battalion Commander of the 92nd in 1945 and later Regimental Executive Officer for the 345th Engineer Regiment, Italy. He also served as Battalion Commander of the 838th Engineer Aviation Battalion at MacDill Field, Florida and for the 378th Engineer Combat Battalion during the Korean conflict. He was an observer at the Korean armistice signing at the 38th Parallel. From 1954-1957, Colonel MacDonald was the director of the ROTC Program at the University of Rhode Island. He later served as the Battalion Commander of the 9th Engineer Combat Battalion in Germany. From 1958 until 1962, Colonel MacDonald was Assistant Engineer and then Engineer for Headquarter V Corps Stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. After his retirement from the armed forces, he served as a Department of Defense (DOD) Civilian, Dir. of Engineering and Housing for Headquarters V Corps. He retired in 1986. During his military career, Colonel Daniel Alexander MacDonald Jr. received a Bronze Star; Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious unit Citation (2 awards), Army Commendation Ribbon with Oak Leaf Cluster, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with 20 years device, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four stars, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (germany), United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with two stars, National Defense Service Medal, and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. Daniel Alexander MacDonald Jr. is survived by his wife Dora L. MacDonald, his son Dr. Daniel E. MacDonald, daughter in law Dr. Maria L. MacDonald, grandson Daniel A. MacDonald, and granddaughter Jennifer E. MacDonald. Visiting hours will be held Saturday July 24, 2010 from 8:30-10:30 followed by interment in Puritan Lawn Cemetery
